Capturing your family’s true vibe in your family photos

I have had a few people reach out to me over the past few months mentioning that they feel influenced to appear in their photos as someone they, and their family, are not. Most mentioned clothing is their main concern. While this may be partly due to the town, in which we live, not having access to many clothing options, they all said a similar thing - that they love the styles and trends out there, but it’s just ‘not them’.

Thanks to the powers of Social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and TicTok, we live in a world full of trends, some that change quickly and others that linger longer. We are bombarded with ‘expectations’ as to what a family should look like – all perfectly dressed in the latest colours and styles, right down to the latest hat tends. These look amazing for the ‘gram’, and if that is your true vibe and style, definitely stick with these (and rock those incredible hats). However, often the latest trends are not for everyone and that is perfectly fine.

I am all for an amazing styled family, who rock up with clothing that complements each other’s choices, and with everything on point from shoes to hats. However, I am also all for the family that wants to turn up in more relaxed clothing which represents their family’s style and personality. These are YOUR images. I am here to capture YOUR family.

My style-guide has many suggestions of colour palettes ranging from neutrals, to pastels, to muted colours to earthy tones through to those beautiful vibrant gems. I do suggest to avoid logos or large branding, board shorts and singlets and too many patterns. But, at the end of the day, if that is your family, then I am here to capture that too.

I have a client wardrobe full of gowns, dresses and shirts that range from ‘on trend’, as well as options that are over the top glam and dramatic, and also options that are casual, classical and traditional. I aim to provide options for everyone, no matter the vibe you want to capture.

Whilst your clothing does play a big part in the final look of the images, the important thing is that every member of your family is comfortable and that your images represent YOUR family and your unique identities. After all, that is truly what we are capturing - your identity at this particular moment in time, as a family and as individuals.

I am a true-to-colour, often vibrant, photographer. I love capturing the colour around us, and aim to represent colours faithfully. If you chose to rock a gorgeous burnt orange dress, it will look that colour in your images. I like my whites to be white and skin tones to be as close to your real life tones as possible.

Photographers all have their own style regarding the way they shoot, run a session and of course, in their editing techniques. This is important as it allows for variety in options for clients. As a client, when choosing your photographer choose based on the vibe and style you want your family captured as. Do not choose a true-to-colour photographer and then ask that the colour be removed or dulled, or go to a browny-toned photographer and ask that the grass be green, or a light and airy photography and ask that the images be dark and moody, or go to a solely black-and-white photographer and ask that the images be in colour.

Choose the photographer you feel will capture your family the way you want your family captured.

Trends are awesome. They serve a purpose. I love them. However your family is your family. Trends change. Your family remains. You are not ‘trends’.  You are not a Pinterest post. Be true to who you and your family are.

I am here to capture YOU and YOUR unique family.
